Nikko Dr. Martin Samuels, MD, DSc (hon), FAAN, MACP is currently the Neurologist-in-Chief and Chairman, Department of Neurology at Brigham and Womens’ Hospital and Professor of Neurology at Harvard Medical School. Dr. Samuels is one of the most well-known and respected teachers of medicine. He received his BA degree from Williams College in Williamstown, Massachusetts in 1967 and graduated from the University of Cincinnati, College of Medicine in 1971. Dr. Samuels is the foremost expert in the world in the interface between neurology and the rest of medicine. He has articulated numerous innovative concepts in the areas of neurocardiology, neurohematology, neurohepatology, neuronephrology, neurorheumatology and the neurological aspects of organ transplantation and acid-base and electrolyte disturbances. His most well-known intellectual contribution involves the mechanisms and prevention of neurogenic cardiac disease. In 1988, Dr. Samuels was recruited to the Brigham and Womens’ Hospital to create a department of neurology from a small division in the department of medicine. In 1995 this goal was realized. Dr. Samuels and his colleagues from neurosurgery and psychiatry have created the Brigham and Womens’ Institute for the Neurosciences (BWINS) that functions as a truly interdisciplinary entity aimed at caring for patients with disease of the nervous system, training the next generation of leaders in the fields of clinical neuroscience and pushing back the frontiers of knowledge with innovative research aimed at curing neurological diseases. The San Francisco Neurological Society is very fortunate to have Dr. Martin Samuels as our guest of honor at the 2007 AIRD Lecture dinner meeting. Welcome! Who Should Attend? Neurologists, neurosurgeons, neuroradiologists, residents and other physicians interested in research and clinical advances in the neurosciences.
This is an activity offered by a CMA-accredited provider. Physicians attending this course may report up to 1 hour of Category 1 credit toward the California Medical Association Certificate in Continuing Medical Education and the American Medical Association’s Physician’s Recognition Award.
EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES: Upon completion of this lecture participants should be able to: 1. Recognize some of the important disorders in the interface between hematology and neurology. 2. Analyze patient problems with neurological complications of hematological disorders. 3. Initiate appropriate therapy for the major neurohematological disorders.
