My Left Foot

Jim Sheridan's 1989 drama based on the autobiography by Christy Brown, "Down All The Days," tells the story of a man who overcame sever physical limitations to become an accomplished painter and writer.  Sheridan's film portrays the astounding arc of Brown's life, beginning with a childhood diagnosis of cerebral palsy that causes everyone but his mother to believe he is brain-damaged.  Brown begins to turn this misconception around by using his left foot and a piece of chalk to scrawl a one-word message to his mother on the floor.  His subsequent growth into a profound artist is something miraculous.  Director Jim Sheridan contributes to a fully three-dimensional portrait of Brown by showing such scenes as Brown playing soccer with his brothers, experiencing the sting of un requited love, and battling alcoholism.
