Fredric Gorin, MD, PhD, Professor of Neurology, UC Davis Medical Center
"
What Constitutes an Inflammatory Neuropathy?”

Bio: Dr. Fredric Gorin received his joint MD-PhD from Washington University with his doctorate in biophysics and physiology utilizing computer-based drug design to study enkephalins. Dr. Gorin did his residency in neurology at UCSF and was also a faculty member in neurology at UCSF. Dr. Gorin participated in the cloning and mapping of the first human muscle disorder, McArdle’s Disease while he was at UCSF. Currently, Dr. Gorin is the professor of neurology at UC Davis Medical Center and he is involved in drug design and signaling pathways pertaining to cancer metastasis and microglia activation and inflammation.

Talk Description: There are many causes of neuropathies. We will focus on neuropathies that are a manifestation of (1) systemic autoimmune and (2) viral disorders and (3) those neuropathies that are primary targets of the immune system. We will discuss the diagnostic criteria for chronic inflammatory demyelinative neuropathies, multifocal neuropathies with block and the clinical variants that make it clinically difficult to distinguish if the neuropathy is immune-mediated. Finally, we will discuss primary immunomodulatory therapies; risks and benefits.

Educational Objectives:

  1. The different manifestations of autoimmune neuropathies.
  2. What is known about the pathogenesis of autoimmune neuropathies.
  3. Treatment strategies for autoimmune neuropathies.
