SAN FRANCISCO NEUROLOGICAL SOCIETY
Joint Dinner Meeting with Kaiser Neurosciences
JOINTLY SPONSORED BY SF NEUROLOGICAL SOCIETY AND KAISER NEUROSCIENCES

Thursday, November 30, 2006
6:30 – 7:00 pm Reception
7:00 – 8:30 pm Dinner / 8:30 – 9:30 pm Presentation

"Difficult-to-Manage Headaches Reflect Difficult-to-Manage Patients:
The Role of Co-morbid Conditions"
Allan L. Bernstein, MD,
Chief, Department of Neurology, Kaiser Permanente, Santa Rosa, California

Hotel Nikko, 222 Mason Street, San Francisco, CA
Telephone:    415-394-1111
Near Union Square and the Powell Street BART Station

DESCRIPTION: As neurologists and neuroscience specialists, we tend to see the patients who have failed primary care medical treatment for their headaches. They often start as episodic migraine but evolve into patients using too many medications, with progressive daily headaches. Imaging and laboratory testing fail to clearly define the source of the problem. Analgesics are rarely the solution. They see multiple specialists, sharing small portions of their problems with each one. Rarely is the whole picture evident. Their name on your appointment book is enough to give you a headache! As a group, we will attempt to define a systematic approach to these complex patients.

Allan L. Bernstein, MD, is currently the director of the Headache Program at Kaiser Permanente, Santa Rosa and co-director of the Clinical Research Center of the North Bay. Dr. Bernstein is the principal investigator in clinical trials in Alzheimer’s disease, stroke, migraine and chronic pain. He also serves as the co-investigator in studies on multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s’ disease and ALS. The SF Neurological Society is grateful for this opportunity to join with Kaiser Neurosciences faculty and residents for this special dinner meeting.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND: Neurologists, neurosurgeons, neuroradiologists, residents and other physicians interested in research and clinical advances in the neurosciences. This is an activity offered by a CMA-accredited provider. Physicians attending this course may report up to 1 hour of Category 1 credit toward the California Medical Association Certificate in Continuing Medical Education and the American Medical Association’s Physician’s Recognition Award. We encourage the members of the San Francisco Neurological Society to join the Northern California Neurosciences Group of Kaiser Permanente for this event which is jointly sponsored by the San Francisco Neurological Society and Kaiser Neurosciences.

EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES: Upon completion of this lecture, participants should be able to:

  1. To understand the role of co-morbid conditions as they effect the management of headache disorders.
  2. To be able to summarize the risks and benefits of current headache treatments.
  3. To develop a practical approach to the patient with refractory headaches.
