Educational Objectives & Continuing Medical Education
EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES: Individuals attending this meeting will be
able to:
1. Review the current disease modifying therapies for MS and be familiar
with risks/benefits of FDA approved disease modifying therapies
2. Discuss the rationale and study design for ongoing and upcoming
treatment trials in MS and that several promising clinical trials are
currently, or soon will be, enrolling study subjects
3. Compare and discuss off-label usage of treatments available at UCSF for
treatment of refractory MS disease to FDA approved therapies with
illustrative case presentations
4. Discuss the scope of medical malpractice litigation in the US as it
relates to neurosurgery.
5. Describe organized neurosurgery's response to the malpractice problem
and liability crisis.
6. Describe the properties of IVIg and its suspected mechanisms of action
in the treatment of neuromuscular disease.
7. Describe the indications for the use of IVIg in neuromuscular
disorders.
8. Compare and contrast the risk/benefit profile of IVIg versus other
treatment options for autoimmune neuromuscular disease.
9. Apply optimal strategies for dosing and administration if IVIg, for
both short-and long-term therapy, based on current knowledge.
10. Recognize the neurochemical processes triggered by ischemia that lead
to neuronal death and interventions that can interrupt these processes
11. Describe basic technique and clinical application of advanced
neuroimaging: perfusion, diffusion, and spectroscopic MR imaging
12. Discuss quantitative MR Imaging and its application to
neurodegenerative aspects of MS, HMRS, DTI and brain atrophy
WHO SHOULD ATTEND:
Neurologists, neurosurgeons, neuroradiologists, residents and other
physicians interested in research and clinical advances in the
neurosciences.
Accreditation Statement
This is an activity offered by San Francisco Neurological Society, a
CMA-accredited provider. Physicians attending this course may report up to
8 hours of Category 1 credits toward the California Medical Association’s
Certification in Continuing Medical Education and the American Medical
Association’s Physician’s Recognition Award. Each physician should claim
only those hours of credit actually spent in the educational activity.
