Description:
Pseudotumor Cerebri (PTC) is a disorder found more commonly in overweight
young women associated with increased intracranial pressure and
papilledema. Debate arises regarding the diagnosis when a patient presents
with elevated pressure during a spinal tap without papilledema. Dr. Egan
will discuss the various treatments including weight loss, diuretics,
shunting, and optic nerve fenestration.
Dr. Egan obtained his medical degree from the Medical College of Wisconsin
and then completed a neurology residency and vascular neurology fellowship
at the Oregon Health & Science University. He then completed fellowship
training in neuro-ophthalmology at the Massachusetts Eye & Ear Infirmary
in Boston before returning to OHSU as the Director of Neuro-Ophthalmology
for 8 and 1/2 years. Recently, he left academic medicine for private
practice in the Napa Valley, California, where he continues to see neuro-ophthalmology
patients and is developing a stoke center. His most recent appointment is
spearheading an international task force studying Susac Syndrome, a rare
disorder that is associated with ischemia to the retina, brain, and
cochlea.
Educational Objectives:
Upon completion of this lecture participants should be able to:
-
Participants will be able to identify
perils and pitfalls of the diagnosis of patients with pseudotumor cerebri.
-
Participants will be able to identify
the most appropriate therapy for patients with pseudotumor cerebri.
-
Participants will also understand the
utility of visual field testing in this disorder as well as co-morbid
conditions such as migraine and other headache disorders and the frequent
occurrence of functional vision loss.
Who Should Attend?
Neurologists, neurosurgeons, pain management
specialists, residents and other physicians interested in research and
clinical advances in the neurosciences.
This is an
activity offered by a CMA-accredited provider. Physicians attending this
