Description:
The main topic of discussion will focus on managing chronic daily headache.  I will briefly be discussing epidemiology and current understanding in pathophysiology.  I will discuss the relevance of medication overuse and strategies aimed at breaking this pattern including steroid bursts, greater occipital nerve injections and intravenous dihydroergotamine.  I will also discuss the future role of stimulators (Occipital Nerve and Deep Brain) in the management of chronic daily headache.

Educational Objectives:
Upon completion of this lecture participants should be able to:

  • Evaluate strategies on how to break medication overuse and chronic daily headache patterns

  • Consider the role of an inpatient hospitalization for headache

  • Summarize the future role of neurostimulation for headache

Bio:
Dr. Abraham J. Nagy is a neurologist who specializes in headache disorders.  He has expertise in the evaluation and management of migraine, migraine variants, cluster headache, trigeminal automatic cephalgias, chronic daily headaches, and intracranial pressure regulation disturbances.  He is also trained in in-hospital medication overuse withdrawal, acute head pain management and in-patient evaluation of headache disorders of diagnostic uncertainty.   

Dr. Nagy is originally from Nevada and completed his undergraduate studies in neuroscience at Columbia University, before receiving his medical degree from University of Nevada School of Medicine. He completed his internal medicine internship and neurology residency at Yale University School of Medicine.  Subsequently, Dr. Nagy completed a fellowship in headache at the University College London, Institute of Neurology, Queen Square.

Who Should Attend?

Neurologists, neurosurgeons, pain management specialists, residents and other physicians interested in research and clinical advances in the neurosciences.

This is an activity offered by a CMA-accredited provider. Physicians attending this course may report up to 1 hour of Category 1 credit  toward the California Medical Association Certificate in Continuing Medical Education and the American Medical Association’s Physician’s Recognition Award.

The San Francisco Neurological Society is an organization of physicians with a dedicated interest in the clinical neurosciences. The Society is committed to the continuing medical education of its members and has an obligation to its members and to the public to provide ongoing educational programs designed to improve patient care and foster scholarly activity in the neurosciences. This obligation includes not only imparting to the membership an increased understanding of neurological diseases through lectures on clinical and basic research, but also making them aware of community and public health issues related to neurological illnesses and preventive medicine. The Society is a CMA-accredited provider.
