“Why Sleep?”

Speaker: Clifford Saper , MD, PhD, James Jackson Putnam Professor of Neurology, Head of the Department of Neurology at the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Harvard Medical School

Clifford B. Saper received his M.D. and Ph.D. degrees and did his internship in internal medicine at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, before doing a neurology residency at Cornell University Medical Center- New York Hospital. He then joined the faculty of Washington University School of Medicine from 1981-1985, then moved to the University of Chicago from 1985-1992. In 1992, he moved to his present position at Harvard Medical School, where he is the James Jackson Putnam Professor of Neurology and Neuroscience and Chairman of the Harvard Department of Neurology at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. Dr. Saper also has served since 1994 as the Editor-in-chief of the Journal of Comparative Neurology, the oldest basic neuroscience journal in the English language. He also serves on the Editorial Boards of Neurology, Journal of Neuroscience, Physiological Genomics, and NeuroImmunoModulation. Dr. Saper has received a Javits Neuroscience Investigator Award from the National Institutes of Health, and was named one of the 100 most frequently cited neuroscientists by the Institute for Scientific Information. He has served as Vice President and Councilor of the American Neurological Association, and on the Program and Publications Committees of both that organization and the Society for Neuroscience. Dr. Saper has been named a Fellow of the American Academy of Neurology, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and the Royal College of Physicians (London).

Dr. Saper’s research has explored circuitry of the brain that controls basic functions such as wake-sleep cycles, brain responses to immune stimulation, and the brain’s control of the cardiovascular and respiratory systems.
In addition to studying neural circuit function in experimental animals, the Saper laboratory also is interested in identifying homologous circuitry in human brains, and in determining how it may be disrupted in specific neurological and psychiatric disorders. Together with the basic research on animal models, this translational approach is providing new clues about the origins of a variety of neurological disorders including Alzheimer's Disease, Tourette Syndrome, schizophrenia and Prader-Willi Syndrome.

Educational Objectives:
1.       Understand the basic brain circuitry of sleep
2.       Discuss the impact of sleep loss on health
3.       Understand the cognitive impact of sleep loss

Who Should Attend?

Neurologists, neurosurgeons, neuroradiologists, residents and other physicians interested in research and clinical advances in the neurosciences.

The San Francisco Neurological Society is an organization of physicians with a dedicated interest in the clinical neurosciences. The Society is committed to the continuing medical education of its members and has an obligation to its members and to the public to provide ongoing educational programs designed to improve patient care and foster scholarly activity in the neurosciences. This obligation includes not only imparting to the membership an increased understanding of neurological diseases through lectures on clinical and basic research, but also making them aware of community and public health issues related to neurological illnesses and preventive medicine. The Society is a CMA-accredited provider. Physicians attending this course may report up to 8 hours of Category 1 credit toward the California Medical Association Certificate in Continuing Medical Education and the American Medical Associations Physicians Recognition Award.
