Spina bifida remains the most frequent severe congenital neurologic anomaly, and when myelomeningocele is present, results in devastating long-term neurologic disability. Continued exposure of neural tissue to the intrauterine environment during fetal development worsens neurologic outcomes. Surgical repair of the anomaly prior to birth may result in improved neurologic outcomes.
Educational Objectives:
- Review the anatomy, pathophysiology, and ontogenesis of myelomeningocele, with the long-term neurological sequelae.
- Explore the history and development of intrauterine neurosurgery
- Identify indications, technique, and complications of fetal surgery vs. neonatal surgery for myelomeningocele

Take the 4th Street exit, which will place you on Bryant Street heading east. Turn left on Main Street. Proceed down Main Street to Market Street veer right across Market. Main then becomes Drumm Street. The Hyatt Regency Hotel is on the right.
FROM BAY BRIDGE / EAST BAY
Exit Fremont Street, the first exit on your right as you come into San Francisco. Stay on Fremont Street. Cross over Market Street which will then become Front Street.
FROM GOLDEN GATE BRIDGE / MARINA
Take Lombard Street to Van Ness Avenue. Make a right on Van Ness and then go 1/2 mile and make a left on California Street. You will go over Nob Hill and at the bottom of the hill make a left on Kearny Street. Make a right on Clay Street.
