SAN FRANCISCO NEUROLOGICAL SOCIETY

SUMMER DINNER MEETING

Wednesday July 25, 2007
Courtyard by Marriott Fairfield
1350 Holiday Lane, Fairfield, CA

Claudia Greco, MD, Associate Clinical Professor of Pathology, UC Davis Medical Center
“The Neurodiagnostic Skin Biopsy: Will It Replace the Sural Nerve Biopsy?”

Bio: Dr. Greco received her medical degree at Penn State University School of Medicine. She did her Residency and Fellowship in anatomic & neuropathology at UC San Diego. Dr. Greco was a faculty member at UCSF and Stanford, as well as in private practice at Pacific Presbyterian and Children’s Hospital (now Sutter) in San Francisco. Currently, Dr. Greco is the associate clinical professor of pathology at UC Davis Medical Center and she is involved in diagnostic and teaching activities, with research interest in Fragile X-related Tremor Ataxia Syndrome (FXTAS).

Talk Description: The cutaneous nerve biopsy is becoming more available for use by neurologists in clinical practice. It is less invasive, less expensive, and can easily be performed in the office setting. Serial skin biopsies can be used to follow progression of disease, or to monitor therapy. The major experience to date with neurodiagnostic skin biopsy has been with small fiber neuropathies; however its utility is expanding.

Educational Objectives:

  1. Familiarize the audience with the neurodiagnostic skin biopsy as a diagnostic procedure for the clinical neurologist.
  2. Discuss the clinical indications for performing this procedure.
  3. Discuss the biopsy procedure, tissue processing, pathological interpretation.
