"3T MRI of the Brain and Spine: The New Standard for Clinical Imaging” Murray A. Solomon, MD, Medical Director, Los Gatos MRI and Redwood City MRI3T MRI has been available as a research tool in university medical centers for almost 15 years and has been available more widely over the last 5 years. When first introduced, 3T MRI was plagued with technical problems and limited clinical applications. Advances in hardware and software over the last couple of years have pushed 3T to the forefront of clinical brain and spine imaging. 3T MRI is no longer experimental or limited to research applications. It should now be considered the field strength of choice for MR imaging of the brain and spine. Murray Solomon obtained his medical degree from the University of California at San Francisco (UCSF). He completed a residency in diagnostic radiology at the Mallinckrodt Institute of Radiology, Washington University Medical Center in St. Louis, Missouri. Dr. Solomon returned to UCSF for a fellowship in neuroradiology and MRI. He helped open the first MRI center between the city limits of San Francisco and Los Angeles in 1984 in San Jose and helped bring the first outpatient 3T MRI until to Northern California in 2004. He is currently the medical director at Los Gatos MRI in Los Gatos and Redwood City MRI in Redwood City. Who Should Attend? Neurologists, neurosurgeons, neuroradiologists, residents and other physicians interested in research and clinical advances in the neurosciences. This is an activity offered by a CMA-accredited provider. Physicians attending this course may report up to 1 hour of Category 1 credit toward the California Medical Association Certificate in Continuing Medical Education and the American Medical Association’s Physician’s Recognition Award. EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES: Upon completion of this lecture participants should be able to: Compare 1.5T and 3T for routine clinical imaging in the brain and spine. Demonstrate the superiority of 3T for the specialty applications of pituitary imaging, cerebellopontine imaging and MRA of the Circle of Willis and Carotid Bifurcation. Discuss new pulse sequences and their applications: T1 FLAIR, 3D spin echo, ultrathin gradient echo images, susceptibility weighted images, double IR inversion recovery. Present examples of advanced applications easily performed at 3T: white matter tractography (fiber tracking), arterial spin labeling and fMRI. Demonstrate total spine imaging with phased array coils
